Some of the best information that I got out of the download really wasn’t about the plans themselves, but rather the huge amount of ideas that the download has in it.  In the shelf section of the diy guide, I found a help file that showed how you should go about deciding which storage and shelf structures are going to be best.  It included locating storage shelves and cupbaords in redundant pace, like under the stairs or under the sink in the bathroom.  Even space like under the bed and in an old fireplace that you would otherwise have blocked off.

There was also loads of information on how to work with a variety of different woods and the information that was really useful to me was how to work with reclaimed and renovated wood.  Wood stripping, filler and finishes were covered in detail.   If this  information wasn’t in the download, I probably would have had to buy a book specifically for it, which would have cost me more money.  Now I have everything I need for any woodworking and diy project right on my computer.

Your Bedroom – Your Sanctuary

For so many people, their bedroom is their sanctuary, but for many it is just another storage space.  Now you can organize your bedroom cupboards to hold more and yet look like less.

Shelf organizers are becoming more and more popular in the bedroom as you can cover an entire wall and be able to really utilize the space to the maximum.

A lot of the cupboard organizer plans that you find online will include shelves, but few include draws that are easy to make and that work in small spaces.

The one thing that you will want to check when looking for closet organizer plans is if they can be customized for your home and the dimensions of your bedroom.

Here is a picture of one of the plans you could use to organize your cupboards.  The project would not be difficult and the extra arrangement of shelves and cupboards gives you more space than just hanging space would.

Although most bookshelf plans are very simple, you don’t have to build boring book shelves if you don’t want to.  Besides the variety of different designs from pyramid or tappered designs to free standing and wall mounted, there are so many to choose from and a lot of scope to really make them more than just functional.

Kitchen Roll Out Shelf Design

Small Shelves for Small Spaces

Bathrooms are often the rooms that need the most storage spaces and have the least.  If you have children then there are the added bathtoys to consider and the toilet roll is always on top fo the toilet.

Now you can build a small toilet paper shelf to solve that problem without having to have a lot of space.  the great thing about this little shelf is that it will fit almost anywhere and creates another area for you to put more of your nick nacks on.

You can also paint the shelf to fit into the overall color scheme of your bathroom or leave it with a wood finish for a more natural look.

While this might look like a complicated project with shelves as well as draws, it really is less complicated than it looks.  It does however, require a bit more expertise than some of the other projects and will also require having a decent set of tools.

Besides offering a lot of information on what materials you should use and how to keep your costs down, this plan also includes a list of the tools you will need, so I’ll include that here too.

Tools for the Job

• Circular saw (or table saw)
• Dado blade attachment
• Drill
• Pilot bit, 1⁄8 or under
• 16 oz. carpenter’s hammer
• Nail set

• Phillips screwdriver
• Slot style screwdriver 3⁄16
• Hacksaw with 18 or 24 t.p.i. blade
• Heavy duty metal snips (for cutting shelf
support ends)
• Fine file (for smoothing cut metal)
• Finish sander
• Paint brushes: 2 and 3
• Safety glasses

Because of this cross grain construction hard plywood is very strong and durable.  Probably the only noticable different between hardwood and softwood plywood is in the two outer layers or vaneers.

In softwood plywood the outer layer will paint well and is used for construction and structural purposes while hardwood plywood is usually finished of naturally allowing the wood to show through and is used more for decorative purposes.

There are different vaneers that are used and the most popular are oak, birch and maple.  Hardwood plywood lends itself well to varnishing and this kind of treatment will actually produce a wonderful effect.

Some of the best reasons to use hardwood plywood is that is easily machines, doesn’t split easily and can also be scored or bent for specific projects much easier than real wood would be.

When You Don’t Want Brackets.

Floating shelves are shelves that don’t have any brackets.  Building them requires bolting the shelf to the wall via screws and these shelves are usually not ideal for heavy weight.

Building floating shelves is generally considered to be rather difficult as you have to ensure that the shelf will be able to hold the weight and without brackets there is a little more technicalwork involved, but this really isn’t true.

Before you build a floating shelf, let’s take a look at what tools you will need and what specialty tools you will have to have…

Your List of Tools will Include:-

• 10, 2” wood screws
• 20, 1-5/8” wood screws
• 15, 1” (2d) finishing nails

And the only Special Tool you will need is:-

• Miter

The final result will look something like the picture below and of course your finish will be relative to what kind of wood you choose and what kind of varnish or paint you decide to use.  Most floating or handing shelves can carry a relative amount of weight of around 15kg or less.  If you want to it to carry more weight than that, you will have to consider the depth of your wall and if it would be possible to leverage your screws further into the wall.

All things considered, as a woodworking project for the beginner, it is not difficult and really doens’t require many tools at all to complete the job.

Building shelves may sound simple, but let me tell you, many a man has fallen on his face with such a project that should be simple and lands up getting the better of him.  I didn’t want to have that happen to me and although I didn’t have to look very far to find the right plans for the job, I was really glad that I had them.

So, where did I get the plans, well I bought them in a collection of plans for just $50.  There were thousands of different plans in the collection and amoungst them were more than 60 different shelves plans, ideas and tips.

What was really great about the collection was that it also included a whole lot of woodworking help guides.  It helped with choosing the kind of wood wor the project, what wood glue was going to be best as well as what type of finish would be best suited

Storage Shelves – What To Consider!

Building a storage shelf was the first project.  We needed something that was flush with the wall as the storeroom would be getting wood and other building equipment in it regularly.   When you think of building storage shelves, you have to take into consideration how much weight is going to be placed on the shelves to ensure that they can handle the job.

The problem with building something so skinny is that often they just aren’t sturdy.  I was really pleased with how easy it was to build and how solid the end product was.

What also made it great was that with the plans came a list of all the tools I would need on the project…

a 2 x 4)

• Adjustable wrench
• 2* level

As you can see, these are the kind of tools that most people who are contemplating building shelves would have in their woodworking shop.  Even if you didn’t have them, you could definatley buy them cheaply from your hardware store .  The other great thing was that the plans were really easy to understand and some even mentioned what level of experience or expertise you would need.
